Start the school holidays with Music!
This Sunday, June 29, is a great chance to fill yourself up with live music and creativity, at folk@canowindra! From 4-6:15pm, at taste Canowindra (Ferguson St), you can while away the first Sunday of the hols with music and poetry from across the region. Entry is by donation (to provide for the main act), and the event is family friendly. We meet on the last Sunday of the month to enjoy the talents of a feature act, surrounded by open mic acts.
“Autumn Leaves” is our feature act for June, which is Cilla Kinross (guitar), Tony McKenzie (viola, keyboard), Tom Sawyer (guitar, wannabe bazouki), Nick King (flute, guitar); all sing, sometimes in extreme circumstances, in four-part harmony. This group fits nicely into the ‘Exhumed’ category as exemplified by the ABC competition for rekindled musicians last year, although that delight awaits. The group plays a rich and unusual mixture of folk, jazz standards, chorus songs, French chanson, quirk (Tom Lehrer/Jake Thackeray) and some classical guitar/flute/viola pieces (very hard to find, you’ll be glad to hear!). The group’s base is the Orange Dirt Music club which meets monthly in Orange and welcomes all comers to its acoustic sessions. Nick also plays in the bushband Tenpenny Bit, Cilla sings in two choirs and Tony sings and plays in everything he can get his hands on…(meanwhile Tom relaxes by the fire and occasionally tunes the bazouki).
Please note that our next folk@canowindra event is a special opportunity for high school aged and young adult performers, on July 27. Please be talking to those musical (or poetic) young people you know who would benefit from meeting other musicians and having the chance to perform in front of a very friendly audience.
